Here are some of the best places to visit in Kitakyushu.
Mojiko Retro” in Mojikou, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, opened in March 1995 as a sightseeing spot, an area lined with buildings built in the early Meiji and Taisho eras.
The Taisho-romantic buildings create a nostalgic atmosphere and a unique ambience. The area still retains a strong sense of atmosphere.
The symbol of Kokura was built in 1602 by Tadaoki Hosokawa after about seven years of work. The castle is known for its famous “Karazukuri” exterior structure, which is similar to the watchtowers of early castle towers, and is currently popular for its exhibitions and other exhibits that make full use of advanced technology.
It is a complex space with a variety of cultural, artistic, and commercial functions, consisting of a gourmet/shopping building, a university building, a cinema complex, a theater, and an art museum. The multiple facilities built on the unique site, which is long and wide in the east-west direction, vary in shape, height, and color, creating a sense of unique and harmonious beauty.
Sarakura is the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of night views in Kitakyushu. Its beauty is said to be “a night view worth 10 billion dollars,” and it is also one of the “New Three Great Night Views of Japan. The panoramic view from the top of the mountain is spectacular. Its easy accessibility is also an attraction.
The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, with its impressive two protruding tubes. The museum has a collection and exhibits works by famous painters such as Katsushika Hokusai and Claude Monet. The museum also has a museum store where visitors can purchase goods and a café where they can relax.
This museum, a 5-minute walk from Mojiko Station, is a facility that introduces the history, culture, and nature of the Kanmon Straits. The museum includes the “Straits Atrium” where visitors can experience history through fantastic sound and light, the “Straits Historical Corridor” where dolls from historical dramas such as the Battle of Dannoura and the Duel at Ganryujima are on display, and the “Straits Retro Street” where Taisho-romantic buildings and streetcars are reproduced.
